 Research Focus of the Lab:

  • Key Areas :

Adipocyte Biology, Insulin Resistance, Obesity & metabolic syndrome

  • Brief Synopsis :

The incidence and prevalence of obesity worldwide is increasing at an alarming rate, making it one of the major public health concerns and a lot of co-morbidities are associated with it like insulin resistance, cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers.

My inquisitiveness in this condition is towards unravelling the underlying mechanisms of adipose tissue dysfunctions and associated insulin resistance.

Considering enormous hyperplasia and hypertrophy of adipose tissue in obesity, the remodelling of its extracellular matrix (ECM) might be playing an important role in modulating the insulin sensitivity. How this ECM remodelling affects the adipose tissue functions is presently my area of interest.

Moreover, it is known that sufficient vascular supply remains at the heart of a healthy expansion of any tissue and Vascular endothelial derived growth factor (VEGF-A) is the principal regulator of it. In obesity it has been seen that despite increased VEGF-A, there is insufficient vasculogenesis in adipose tissue which ultimately leads to the metabolically unhealthy adipose tissue expansion. So, I am also working on bringing insights to this paradox, as improvement of the vascular supply might avert much of the adipose tissue dysfunctions in obesity.

My projects are targeted to address the improvement in the co-morbidities associated with obesity with sustaining a metabolically healthy life of such individuals.

Her MD Thesis title is “Study of ECM Remodeling in adipose tissue dysfunctions in obesity”

She has won Mrs. Dwarka Prasad Trust Travel Grant in 2019 to present her work at 15th Asia Pacific Federation for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine (APFCB) Congress; Jaipur in Nov 2019

Also won best oral paper award in AMBION 2020: National Postgraduate Update cum CME, Chandigarh, November, 2020 (Online Presentation)

3.      Dr Saba Amin khan (Senior Resident):

She has done her MD in Biochemistry from Maulana Azad Medical College; New Delhi and joined as senior resident in our department in Aug 2019

Apart from departmental UG/PG activities, she is working in lab’s ongoing projects under my supervision.

4.      Dr Kuntal Chakraborty (Second year MD Student):

His MD Thesis title is “A prospective study of changes in human Gut Microbiota (GM) and its association with insulin sensitivity in obese individuals undergoing Bariatric Surgery:

He has been awarded ICMR financial support for his MD thesis (Dec 2020)

 5.      Dr Prachi Priyadarshini (Second year MD student):
