फिज़ियोलॉजी विभाग की स्थापना और विकास विख्यात न्यूरोफिजियोलॉजिस्ट प्रो. कृष्ण आनंद द्वारा वर्ष 1956 में की गई थी। यहां एमबीबीएस के प्रथम बैच के छात्रों को वर्ष 1956 में प्रवेश दिया गया था। प्रथम एमडी छात्र (1959) थे डॉ. प्रीतम कौर गिल और डॉ. सुशील दुआ जबकि प्रथम पीएचडी छात्र (1965) डॉ. आर. विजयन पिल्लई थे। विभाग के स्वर्णिम कालों (1956-1975) के दौरान विभाग ने कई राष्ट्रीय और अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अनुसंधानों तथा छात्रों को आकृष्ट किया जिसमें डॉ. एस.के. दुआ, डॉ. जी.एस. छिना, डॉ. के.एन. शर्मा, डॉ. एस.के. मनचंदा, डॉ. टी. डेसिराजू, डॉ. उषा नायर, डॉ. उताका उमूरा के नाम प्रमुख हैं। विभाग में वर्ष 1961 के दौरान प्रथम बार योग और ध्यान पर प्रथम वैज्ञानिक अन्वेषण की शुरूआत डॉ. आनंद और डॉ. छिना द्वारा की गई थी।

1974 में एम्स में आयोजित इंटरनेशनल यूनियन ऑफ फिजियोलॉजिकल साइंसेज की XXVI कांग्रेस।
1990 में पहली एओपीएस कांग्रेस का आयोजन किया गया था।
2005 में विश्व नींद की दूसरी अंतरिम कांग्रेस का आयोजन किया गया था।
प्रो. उषा नायर ने 1994 में बीपीकेआईएचएस, धरान, नेपाल की स्थापना में मदद की।
प्रो के.के. दीपक ने 1998 में बीपीकेआईएचएस, धरान, नेपाल में संयुक्त योग क्लीनिक और पहली ऑटोनोमिक फंक्शन लैब की स्थापना की।

प्रोफ़ेसर बी.के. आनंद (1917-2007)
वर्ष 1952 में चूहों के फीडिंग व्यवहार पर हाइपोथैलेमस की भूमिका पर यूएसए में अपना अग्रणी अनुसंधान पूरा करने के बाद, वे भारत वापस आ गए और वर्ष 1956 से 1974 तक फिज़ियोलॉजी विभाग का नेतृत्व किया। उन्हें विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी के लिए वर्ष 1963 में शांति स्वरूप भटनागर पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया और उनके सराहनीय योगदानों के लिए वर्ष 1969 में पद्म श्री सम्मान भी प्रदान किया गया।
प्रोफ़ेसर बलदेव सिंह (1904-1998)
उन्हें वैज्ञानिक समुदाय द्वारा अक्सर ‘न्यूरॉन दादा’ के तौर पर भी संदर्भित किया जाता है। वे एम्स में फिजियोलॉजी के एमिरिटस प्रोफेसर के रूप में शामिल हुए। वे पार्श्व हाइपोथैलेमस, हाई अल्टिट्यूड, योग, निद्रा, चेतना और हाइपरपाइरेक्सिया पर अनुसंधानों में रुचि रखते थे। उनके नेतृत्व में, यह विभाग न्यूरोफिजियोलॉजिकल अनुसंधान का एक अंतरराष्ट्रीय केंद्र बन गया।
प्रोफेसर जीएस छीना (1926-2011)
वे एम्स के फिज़ियोलॉजी विभाग में शामिल हुए डॉ. बी.के. आनंद और डॉ. बलदेव सिंह के साथ मिलकर भोजन की खुराक, प्रजनन और योग पर कार्य किया। वर्ष 1986 में सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद भी, उन्होंने एमिरिटस (अवकाश प्राप्त) प्रोफेसर के रूप में काम करना जारी रखा और फिजियोलॉजी के क्षेत्र में योगदान दिया।
सुरेन्द्र कुमार मनचंदा (1931-1998)
वे प्रोफ़ेसरबी. के. आनंद के अधीन वर्ष 1957 में फिज़ियोलॉजी विभाग में एक निदर्शक/प्रदर्शक के रूप में सम्मिलित हुए थे। वर्ष 1974 में वे फिज़ियोलॉजी के प्रमुख और व्याख्याता के रूप में कार्यभार ग्रहण किया और नवंबर 1991 तक विभाग का नेतृत्व किया। उन्होंने तंत्रिका विज्ञान और प्रजनन के क्षेत्र में प्रमुख वैज्ञानिक योगदान दिया।
