DEPARTMENTAL RESEARCH

Research activities: Dr. Vijay L. Kumar

The focus of research has been in following areas:

  1.       Molecular pharmacology of steroid and growth factor receptors in cancer

We have been working on the clinical implications of steroid and growth factor receptors in hormone dependent cancers and studied their expression in endometrial, breast and prostate cancer. Our work on regulation of androgen receptor (AR) has shown that androgenic deprivation results in up-regulation of AR. We have demonstrated the presence of multiple splice variants of estrogen receptor (ER) in breast cancer and our research has suggested that composite analysis of ER and its variants may serve as a better prognostic marker. Besides, we have also demonstrated expression, amplification and polymorphism of EGFR in prostatic diseases.

2.           Development of experimental models to screen anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic drugs

Based on the pro-inflammatory property of the latex of plant Calotropis procera, models were developedfor screening anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic drugs.

Simple plant-based models were developed to screen compounds exhibiting cytotoxic properties.

3.      Medicinal properties of the latex of plant Calotropis procera

We have been working for last several years on the medicinal properties of latex of the plant Calotropis procera and demonstrated that extracts prepared from the latex produce potent anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effects in experimental models. Besides beneficial effects in various disease models like arthritis, diabetes, and hepato-cellular carcinoma, the extract derived from the latex has recently been shown to afford protection in colitis and colorectal cancer.

4.      Protection against drug-induced toxicity

Drugs and plant-derived preparations are being evaluated for their protective effect against drug-induced toxicity in experimental models, for e.g., hepato-renal toxicity induced by cyclosporine A and other drugs.

5.      Evaluation of analgesic and anti-inflammatory property of drugs

Drugs are being evaluated for their analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties using well established experimental models.
